found📍can Hamburg build a startup hub that actually lasts?
Your weekly guide to Hamburg's startup and tech scene — events, jobs, and opportunities.
Editor’s Note
Hey, dear reader!
The FT just ranked 180 startup hubs across Europe, and Hamburg didn't make the cut. Before you shrug that off, it's worth looking at the pattern of who did.
Munich's UnternehmerTUM took the top spot for the third year running. Berlin, Nuremberg, Stuttgart, all in top 20. What they share is a combination of university roots, public-private funding, and years, sometimes decades, of uninterrupted operation. UnternehmerTUM has been around since 2002.
Beyond just qualifying, the FT also evaluates hubs on the startups they produce. By that measure, Hamburg had a genuinely strong story to tell. The Next Commerce Accelerator was ranked among the top 3 hubs in Germany by this very ranking in 2024 — and rightly so. It gave us Localyze ($47M raised, acquired by Boundless in 2025). The Next Media Accelerator gave us AdTriba (acquired by Funnel in 2024). AI.STARTUP.HUB produced OceanScore ($5M raised). Genuine success stories, all of them. But none of the programs that produced them are still running — the companies survived, the institutions didn't.
That's the pattern worth paying attention to, and it's tempting to look at Impossible Founders and feel cautiously optimistic. The shape is right — university roots, long-term institutional backing, a genuine public-private mix. Hamburg, for once, seems to have assembled the ingredients. The harder question is whether ingredients are enough, or whether what actually makes a hub like UnternehmerTUM work after twenty years is something you can't set up in a funding round.
Can Hamburg pull it off? I want to believe so, but belief alone is hardly enough. The institution is there, but the culture that makes it compound can't be funded. It's built by founders and operators who show up and stay. That part is on us.
